Soaked carpet and padding in Spokane, WA
Wet carpet and pad cleanup in Spokane homes
Carpet itself is tougher than it looks. The pad underneath is usually what decides whether the floor gets dried or replaced.

- Pad replacement
- Clean and contaminated water

Quick answer
Wet carpet cleanup in Spokane depends on the water category and how long it sat. Carpet soaked by clean water and extracted within a day or two can often be dried in place, sometimes with only the pad replaced. Carpet that took in gray water for days, or any black water, is removed along with the pad.

Carpet, pad and subfloor: three layers that dry differently
Wall-to-wall carpet has a woven backing that sheds water fairly well. The pad below is foam or fiber that soaks up water like a sponge and presses it against the subfloor. Under that, wood subfloor or a concrete slab holds moisture longest, and pad on a slab is the slowest of all to dry. A carpet that feels nearly dry on top after a day can still have a pad dripping underneath.
We start with weighted extraction, which pushes most of the water out of the pad through the carpet. Then the category and the clock decide the next step. Clean water caught early usually means drying the carpet in place. Longer exposure or dirty water means pulling the pad and sometimes the carpet.

Pad replacement under salvageable carpet
Pad is cheap compared with carpet, and it is the layer most likely to hold odor and bacteria. When the carpet is worth keeping but the pad stayed wet too long or took on Category 2 water, we cut out the wet pad, leave the carpet attached at the far edges, and dry the carpet and subfloor separately. New pad goes in once the subfloor reads dry, and the carpet is stretched back onto the tack strip. Tack strip that rusted or swelled gets replaced at the same time.

Drying carpet in place
For clean water extracted quickly, we can float the carpet: lift one edge off the tack strip and slide an air mover under it so it inflates slightly, drying the backing, pad and subfloor at the same time. A dehumidifier in the room takes out what the air carries away. Floating works well on a single room of carpet with a firm pad, and less well on glued-down carpet or areas under heavy furniture. We check the backing for delamination before and after, since separated backing will not hold a stretch.

Contaminated carpet
Carpet that sat in toilet overflow, washing machine discharge for days, or any sewage or outside flood water is a different job. Fibers, backing and pad all trap contamination that cleaning cannot fully reach. Standard practice is to remove and discard both carpet and pad, clean and treat the subfloor, then dry it. We bag the material, wear protective gear, and photograph it for your claim before it leaves the house. If the water was sewage, see our sewage cleanup page.
The longer it sits, the more comes out.

What we do with wet carpet, step by step
- 01
Identify the water
We confirm the source and category, which sets whether carpet and pad can stay.
- 02
Extract
A weighted extractor pushes water out of the pad through the carpet.
- 03
Test the layers
We meter the pad and subfloor and check the carpet backing for separation.
- 04
Dry, replace or remove
Float-dry in place, pull only the pad, or remove both if contaminated.
- 05
Reinstall
New pad and tack strip go down once the subfloor reads dry, and the carpet is restretched.
Local conditions
Carpeted lower levels in Spokane Valley homes
Spokane Valley had 103,078 residents in 2020, and its typical home was built around 1979, with only about 4.8 percent dating to 1939 or earlier. That housing age points to plenty of wall-to-wall carpet, much of it in finished basements and family rooms laid straight over concrete. Carpet on a slab dries slower than carpet on wood because concrete gives back moisture for days, so on Spokane Valley lower levels we often pull the pad even when the carpet stays.
Cost
Carpet water damage cost ranges
HomeServe's April 2026 guide lists carpet replacement at about $2 to $8 per square foot nationally. That planning range, not our price, is the alternative to drying. Saving the carpet and replacing only the pad usually costs less than full replacement, which is why we test before cutting. The water category, how long it sat and whether the carpet is on a slab or wood all shape the decision.
Wet carpet: what you can do and what to leave
A few steps help right away; others cause damage.
| Task | Doing it yourself | When we do it |
|---|---|---|
| Blotting a small spill | Towels and a fan handle a cup or two on a small area. | When the pad is soaked across a room. |
| Renting a carpet cleaner | It removes surface water but cannot press out a soaked pad. | We bring weighted extraction for that. |
| Pulling up carpet yourself | Easy to tear the backing or damage the tack strip. | We lift it at seams and edges to keep it reusable. |
| Running fans | Helps a little, but humidity climbs without a dehumidifier. | We pair air movers with dehumidifiers. |
| Shampooing contaminated carpet | Not safe for sewage or flood water. | We remove and discard it. |
Dry carpet in place or replace pad and carpet
Here is how the choice usually breaks down.
| Dry in place | Replace pad or carpet | |
|---|---|---|
| Water type | Category 1, extracted quickly | Category 2 left sitting, or any Category 3 |
| What stays | Carpet and usually the pad | Pad goes; carpet goes too if contaminated |
| Odor risk | Low if dried quickly | Lowest, since wet material is removed |
| Subfloor | Dries under the floated carpet | Exposed, cleaned and dried directly |
| Carpet on concrete | Slower, slab holds moisture | Often the more reliable path |
Carpet & Pad Water Damage questions
The surface might, but the pad and subfloor hold water for days, which leads to odor, delaminated backing and mold. A small damp spot will dry with airflow. A soaked room needs extraction and dehumidifiers.
Mold can start on wet organic material within a couple of days in a warm house. Carpet pad and the dust in it give mold something to feed on, so get water out as soon as possible.
If it dried quickly from clean water, usually not. A lingering smell means the pad or subfloor stayed wet too long or the water was dirtier than it looked, and the pad usually needs replacing.
Often, yes. If the carpet backing has not separated and the water was clean or only lightly contaminated, we replace the pad, dry the carpet and subfloor, then restretch the carpet onto new or existing tack strip.
Washing machine water is Category 2. If extracted the same day, carpet can often be cleaned and kept with new pad. If it sat for days, carpet and pad usually come out.
